Pressure/Reward for Armenia's signing
Also, everyone in the West knew that Serge was not a democratically elected president. They are more willing to treat him as such now that he went along with the superpowers and betrayed his people (who hadn't elected him in the first place).
Big Step Backwards!
In response to Mr. Sarkis Assadourian, I say that the alternative to signing this agreement, according to the vast majority of Armenians responding on this website, is to continue to negotiate a more intelligent agreement. It has been a very short time since Armenia became once again an independent republic. Our role in the region is still evolving but I would have to say that Armenia has made great progress given the very tense region in which it exists, war with the Azeris, hostility from Turkey, and lack of support from the Bush Administration in the USA. Hastily signing this agreement was a huge step backward and dooms the nation to an inferior position. Do you really think Turks and Azeris are now going to jump in to help Armenia and that we are now friends? They are already calling for us to leave Azerbijan, refused to resolve the historical genocide, and are looking forward, now that they "patched things up with Armenia", to being accepted into the EU. Rather one-sided, don't you think?
If your goal is to strengthen Turkey, then I guess you would sign the agreement. Otherwise, it would have been better to work out an agreement that was at least as generous for Armenia.
Whatever our diaspora says
But here are some questions:
- Where was the diaspora on March 1st, 2008, when the Armenian government took the army to the streets, shot and killed 10 innocent people?
- Where has the Diaspora been all these years when the Armenian people have struggled trying to set up a true democracy and have a government put in power by the people and not through the scams and assassinations?
The diaspora should have raised concerns about these matters first, so that we could have had a government for the people and by the people. That government would definitely have not committed the shameful acts. Instead it would have protected the interests of both Armenia and our Diaspora!
To FBP
In answer to Mr. Edmond Beglarian
Dear Mr. Beglarian:
Your comments are quite justified and I share your feelings and your views in this matter completely.
Basically, if Serje Sargsyan signs that "Roadmap" document we can kiss goodbye to Armenia and the Artsakhian lands that our thousands of Fedayi brothers gave away their sweet lives for. Without Artsakh Armenia will be basically eaten up by both the Turks and the Azerbaijanees and their wishes and aspirations of pan turkism will come true.
If Serje Sargsyan signs that "Roadmap" document; we can kiss goodbye to our Sevres Treaty which is our only Legal existing Document that is still in effect until today and with it our rights of our Western Armenian lands and the rights for renumeration of our million's of our martyrs who were slaughtered barbarically and mercilessly. Finally we will give away the right of way for any renumeration either for money, for the houses that we lost and finally our Western Armenian lands that has belonged to us for millenia.
To Edmond Beglarian
I do not doubt your patriotism and I hope you don't doubt the patriotism of others if they disagree with you. In my opinion, and based on what I have read so far, all the points you are making are highly speculative to say the least. I simply think, not enough details are known about this so called "road map" and any reaction to it is premature, whether negative or positive. I do however have a difference of opinion with you. It's important to keep what we HAVE, before we start talking about what we WANT. We are keeping Artsakh, that's what I am reading so far from the language of this road map. The single priority that should be to see a stable Armenia (politically, economically, socially, etc..). In my mind that supersedes the historic and moral demands of Armenians.
Turkey-Armenia "dialogue"
Moscow must begin to significantly assist Armenia and not to undermine its position internationally, as Armenia is an all round "strategic ally", and Armenians worldwide should wake up to this fact.
To the Government of the Republic of Armenia:
We the Armenian people like to bring to your attention of our great concerns in regards to recent events on border opening with Turkey and the consequence agreements and commitments either agreed and signed by you or pressured upon you by other States. Even though we feel that certain steps are necessary to bring conciliation between us and Turkey we strongly protest against any concessions to the following:
1- Avoiding statements or international actions relating to Genocide recognition and agreements by you on a joint study by scholars from Turkey and Armenia, backed by United States, Russia and the European Union and its Member States on an issue that is already a proven fact but not recognized by certain states due to political reasons.
2- Withdrawals from any Buffer Zones under Armenian forces by OSCE Minsk Group basic principles on a Nagorno-Karabakh settlement before reaching a complete and unequivocal territorial agreements and a signed peace treaty with Azerbaijan.
3- Recognition of Turkey’s territorial integrity within the borders laid out in the 1921 Treaty of Kars and nullifying the Treaty of Sevres.
We are ready to move forward with our Turkish counterparts but by no means are we willing to concede any of these rights. We trust that our Government in Armenia represents not only the well being of the Republic, but also the well being and the prosperous future of all Armenians including the large Diasporan population scattered around the world.
Thank you.
Turkish-Armenian Agreement
I am sorry to be blunt, but the comment above from Edmond Beglarian is out of place. He should be more transparent in stating whether his comments are his own opinion or that of an organisation/party he represents. He does not represent the entire Armenian people. According to the poll that I see in front of me at least 11% of posted votes approve of this treaty. I for one don't know enough about the geopolitical conditions that have convinced the Armenian government to agree to the terms.
my 2 cents
